Reverse Osmosis System

If you haven’t heard the word “osmosis” since Biology class in college, we’re not surprised. It is not a common word–unless you’re talking about water purification. At Alamo Water Softeners, it is a word we use a lot and one our customers love.

Why?

It is one of the best tools we have to give them great-tasting clean water on demand. Our reverse osmosis (RO) water filter systems have multiple stages that use the power of osmosis alongside other filters to remove nearly everything but the water from your drinking water. Water from a reverse osmosis system tastes great because it doesn’t contain unwanted chemicals or contaminants. When you have an AO Smith Clear Flo Reverse Osmosis System (RO), you can be confident in the quality of your drinking water.

Using a multi-stage filtration system, Clear Flo filters help remove impurities, even those not visible to the eye. From heavy metals to chlorine and large suspended particles, reverse osmosis systems can handle it all.

These systems will deliver up to 100 gallons of filtered water per day. So every time you go to the faucet, you’re assured healthier, fresher water for your family.

Reverse Osmosis System

Pre-Filter

The first cartridge water encounters removes most large particles. This extends the life of your membrance.

Water with Contaminants

Water with any additional particles enter the membrane chamber. Pressure forces the flow through the process.

Semi-Permeable Membrane

Impurities are collected by the membrane while water molecules pass through freely.

Filtered Water

Water is released from the membrane cartridge
to continue to the next stage.

Post-Filter

Impurities small enough to pass through the membrane
are removed by a carbon block filter.

Holding Tank

Treated water accumulates in the storadge tank
to ensure there is always an on-demand supply.

Final Carbon Filter

As water is drawn to the faucet, it travels through another carbon filter as a final polish.

Reverse Osmosis, commonly referred to as RO, is a process where you demineralize or deionize water by pushing it under pressure through a semi-permeable reverse osmosis filter, also called a membrane.

To understand the purpose and process of Reverse osmosis you must first understand the naturally occurring process of osmosis. Osmosis is a naturally occurring phenomenon and one of the most important processes in nature. It is a process where a weaker saline solution will tend to migrate to a strong saline solution. Examples of osmosis are when plant roots absorb water from the soil and our kidneys absorb water from our blood.

A solution that is less concentrated will have a natural tendency to migrate to a solution with a higher concentration. A semi-permeable membrane is a membrane that will allow some atoms or molecules to pass but not others. A simple example is a screen door. It allows air molecules to pass through but not pests or anything larger than the holes in the screen door.

Reverse osmosis is the process of osmosis in reverse. A reverse osmosis membrane is a semi-permeable membrane that allows the passage of water molecules but not the majority of dissolved salts, bacteria and chemicals. However, you need to ‘push’ the water through the reverse osmosis membrane by applying pressure that is greater than the naturally occurring osmotic pressure in order to desalinate water in the process, allowing pure water through while holding back a majority of contaminants.

Alamo Water Softeners recommends reverse osmosis drinking water systems for those who want the highest quality water for their families. It gives you high quality water now, and protects you and your family from any mistakes the city may make with our water system. Alamo Water Softeners utilizes HydroGuard reverse osmosis systems. These systems are manufactured in the USA and produce high quality drinking water quickly and easily.

Using Osmosis in Reverse

Osmosis describes how water moves across a membrane like those in our bodies. Water naturally moves from an area with a high concentration of particles to an area of low particle concentration. This keeps our bodies hydrated and cells in balance. If we apply pressure to the water, though, we can force it to flow the opposite way, leaving behind the particles and unlocking the magic of reverse osmosis.

An RO system uses reverse osmosis to remove particles and contaminants from your water. Pressure forces water to flow through a membrane containing small holes. While the water crosses easily, contaminants and other particles that are too large cannot pass through. Thus, your water is significantly cleaner after crossing the membrane. And this is just one of many filters your water will pass through in a reverse osmosis system before it reaches your glass.

The Benefits of Reverse Osmosis

Water filters come in all shapes and sizes. The best filter for your home is the one that provides you with safe and clean drinking water. That is where Alamo’s reverse osmosis water filter systems excel. The unique reverse osmosis filtration process removes heavy metals, chemicals, asbestos, and dozens of other contaminants. The water that comes out of an RO system is exceptionally clean when compared to ordinary tap water.

A healthy lifestyle begins with proper hydration. It is easier to meet your healthy goals if you have healthy and tasty water. A reverse osmosis filter removes sediment and chemicals that give your water an unwanted “earthy” or chemical taste. Even your cooking may taste better when you use filtered water.

For many who enjoy the taste of clean water, bottled water may seem like the only reliable solution. However, purchasing bottled water presents some problems of its own. While plastic bottles are recyclable, they do not always make it into the recycling bin. Thus, these bottles pose a potential environmental hazard. Additionally, purchasing bottled water can add significantly to your grocery budget. Wouldn’t it be better to have a source of water you loved on demand?

You can. An RO system from Alamo Water Softeners gives you a second water tap at your sink that gives you direct access to the water your system filters for you. No more bottles, no more extra expenses.

Unlike other whole home filtration options, a reverse osmosis system is designed to provide clean water to a single location in your home. If you are looking for “reverse osmosis companies near me,” contact Alamo.

Many homeowners in Texas have chosen to have us install an RO system in their kitchens. In this location, it gives them easy access to water for drinking and cooking via a second tap located next to the kitchen faucet. We handle the setup and installation, and you get to enjoy clean water on tap.

Your Reverse Osmosis System

Most reverse osmosis water filter systems consist of multiple filters that address various aspects of your water, from solid particles to dissolved chemicals. Each step in the system takes place within a filter. RO systems usually have three or more filters or stages. After the water has been through each step of the process, the water enters a holding tank. A full holding tank gives you access to gallons of clean water when you want it without waiting for it to travel through the filters.

Reverse osmosis systems require little maintenance and produce gallons of clean drinking water every day. Regularly changing the reverse osmosis water filters in your system will help ensure you get high-quality water from your system. Swapping out the filters for clean ones does require a bit of DIY expertise, though. If it’s a job you’d rather not tackle, Alamo’s technicians are happy to change your RO filters.

Frequently Asked Questions

A whole house carbon water filter reduces chlorine and chloramine, and other tastes and odors, improving the feel and smell of your home's water. If you have hard water, we recommend pairing it with a water softener to remove the minerals as well.
The carbon media typically lasts five to 10 years, depending on your household's water usage and water quality. During routine service visits, Alamo's technicians monitor the media's condition to ensure it continues removing contaminants effectively and can advise you when it's time for replacement.
Yes. Many homes use a carbon filter with a softener. The carbon system removes chlorine, chloramine, and odors from water before it enters the softener, which helps protect the softener and improve taste. For families who want both benefits in one unit, Alamo Water Softeners also offers all-in-one systems that combine carbon and resin media in a single tank. These systems remove chlorine and hardness in one step and can include WiFi-enabled valves so you can monitor water use, regeneration, and system performance right from your phone.
Absolutely. Many cities add chlorine or chloramine to municipal water, which can strip natural oils from skin and hair, leading to dryness and irritation. Installing a carbon filter removes these chemicals, making showers and baths gentler. Many people notice smoother skin and softer hair after adding a carbon filtration system.
