Get Well with North Calgary Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a healing modality of Traditional Chinese Medicine that has been evolving for thousands of years. By using needles to interact with the energetic systems of the body, acupuncture allows for increased flow and decreased stagnation of our body’s innate healing system.

Very thin needles are placed into various acupressure points throughout the body, all of which are associated with a different meridan that also intersects with our major organs. That’s why meridians are often called a name associated with two organs.

With this concept in mind, it is easier to see the body as the holistic lifeform it is, constantly interacting with other parts of the body or mind, not separate from one another. This complicated interaction and the existence of meridians is why acupuncture can treat so many different ailments with one approach. It’s also why some symptoms seem to clear up as other symptoms are treated.

For example, when someone has a knee injury, they may find that getting acupuncture for their knee pain also clears up their irritable bowel syndrome. This is possible because of points shared on the same meridian.

What does an acupuncture treatment feel like?

Acupuncture is very relaxing for most people, some even say more relaxing than getting a massage. The needles themselves are very thin and you do not feel them once they’re in. You will feel a little poke as they’re being placed. If you feel more than a poke, they’ll be removed.

Once placed, you may not feel much at all, like you’re just laying there. But soon you’ll feel increased calmness or ease, decreased pain, or waves of decreasing and then increasing pain. This is totally normal. Some people report that acupuncture feels like cycles of increasing and decreasing flow throughout the body. This is the healing process!

After acupuncture, it’s important to stay hydrated as this helps perpetuate the healing process, and you may feel like you need the water after your body has just committed a lot of energy to its own healing. You might feel relaxed and ready to sleep, or you might feel clear-headed and energetic. This will help you determine whether to schedule morning or afternoon appointments.

Acupuncture is a wonderfully, non-invasive, low-risk treatment option for many injuries and common ailments.
